Alyeska has largely been left alone by the masses, so lift lines are usually non-existent. Squaw Valley is the crown jewel of Lake Tahoe. This North Lake Tahoe ski and snowboard area has been the centre of snowsports since hosting the 1960 Winter Olympic games. Squaw Valley also operates in tandem with nextdoor Alpine Meadows, which used to operate as a separate ski and snowboard area. The two are not physically connected (although that is in the plans), however a free shuttle operates between the two. While Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are best known for the advanced and expert terrain, there is a good mix for every ability of skier and snowboarder. As one of the birthplaces of modern “extreme” skiing, however, the steeps and tight chutes are what have made these mountains famous around the world. There is lodging available at Squaw Valley, too, so visiting skiers and snowboarders can stay right at the base of the mountain or in nearby Truckee.

There’s a rich history of snowboarding at Stratton. Way back in 1983, Stratton Mountain became the first major resort to allow snowboarding. In 1985, Burton launched the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championship at Stratton Mountain where it ran for 30 years and evolved into one of snowboarding’s most prestigious events, bringing the sport’s top athletes and coaches to the area. Located in Vermont’s “snowbelt” Stratton receives a good amount of natural snowfall each year backed up by one of the best snowmaking systems on the East Coast.
