RESORTS: Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen & Madarao
The Nagano region in central Honshu is home to some of the biggest and best mountains which all score enormous amounts of powder each season. The ‘Japanese Alps’ get hit with consistent storms throughout winter and create some of the best riding on the planet. On this tour we visit the world famous resorts of Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen. Madarao is a lesser known resort we ride but in no way does that reflect the terrain on offer, this place is consistently one of our most popular places with guests every season. Shiga Kogen is arguably the largest ski area in all of Japan with 19 resorts interconnected and huge elevation ensuring cold, dry Japanese powder on tap. Nozawa Onsen is world renowned for its amazing tree riding and you’ll be hard pressed to wipe a smile off your face after a day riding deep powder through these tree runs! This tour is fully hosted and guided by Mint Tours and numbers are capped at 8 guests ensuring maximum time spent on the snow.

About Nozawa Onsen
Nozawa Onsen is a sub-treeline resort which offers an impressive 1,085 meters of vertical. There are plenty of steep groomers which on a powder day can be epic, but the real highlight is the tree riding around this resort. This place scores a lot of snow and when you score a proper powder day the trees are the place to be. Apart from amazing riding this place is famous for it’s Onsen’s (Natural Hot Spring) and these can be found all throughout the town. People walk around in their traditional ‘Yukata’ gowns going from Onsen to Onsen, a fantastic way to rest sore legs after a long day in the powder! There are great restaurants and bars in town to check out and this place has a good nightlife scene.
Madarao has been a favourite for Mint Tours for years and there are so many reasons that keep us coming back. Madarao is a really progressive resort which not only allows off piste riding, they encourage it! There are many graded tree runs off the main trails which all spit you back out to lifts – no hiking required. As well as these off-piste zones they also built a ‘ultra-natural’ style terrain park in the trees. Log rails, pole-jams, man made cliffs and natural features galore. The log cannon rail has to been seen to be believed, it’s not for the faint hearted! Madarao also has a great natural halfpipe run which snakes through a gulley offering banks, hips, jumps and tree hits.
About Shiga Kogen
Shiga Kogen is easily the largest ski area in Honshu with 19 interconnected resorts on offer. Our favourite is Okushiga Kogen which only started allowing snowboarders on the mountain recently! Okushiga also allows off-piste riding and has some fantastic steep runs to hit. The area of Shiga Kogen is known for it’s amazing snow quality. It’s sheer elevation combined with it’s favourable aspect means Shiga usually has the best quality snow in Nagano and keeps it cold and dry for days.
All of our accomodation throughout the tour is Twin Share western rooms. Breakfast is included at each hotel and we are located centrally in town. We stay in Ski in Ski out accomodation at Shiga Kogen and Madarao. Our accomodation in Nozawa is centrally located in the village and only a short walk to the Gondola station.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Experience riding powder is not necessary.
