Zao Onsen Snowboard Tours
Off the beaten path? Check. Onsens? Check. Uncrowded slopes? Check. Zao Onsen is one of our favourite secret spots to shred and definitely worth the hike up from Tokyo. It’s located in the northeastern Tohoku region of Honshu; a perfect spot for those Siberian winds to bring not only epic snowfall for powder hounds to enjoy (up to 12 metres annually), but enough to create the infamous ‘Zao Snow Monsters’. Being a traditional onsen ski village, enjoy a distinct lack of Western presence with endless onsens (both public bathhouses and rotenburos), izakayas, and ryokan-style accomodation – perfect for those wanting a true Japanese ski resort vibe. With an impressive vertical drop, runs up to a leg-burning 10km, and epic off-piste, Zao is a freeride haven. There are plenty of opportunities to score Zao Pow well into the day, with most visitors sticking to the lower slopes (meaning more freshies for us!). Head down to Yamagata City for vibrant nightlife, or take a day trip to Miyagi Zao and visit the famous Fox Village! Chase the Japow up North to Zao and tackle some snow monsters!
