Unisideverse Tour

This is a bucket list trip where you can spend the week snowboarding in Japan with one of the most influential snowboarders of all time – Ingemar Backman. Having been featured on nearly every snowboard magazine cover around the world with his legendary BS air in Riksgränsen, Ingemar’s name is still synonymous with sending it. Join Ingemar and his long time friend and collaborator Abbe Hjellström for a week sending it in Japan next February.

Ingemar and Abbe’s Unisideverse Tour is all about keeping an open mind which is why this tour focuses on exploring the ‘under-the-radar’ resorts of the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. Escape the crowds and high profile resorts and get back to a place in the mountains where creativity rules. You’ll spend the week road-tripping and riding the little-known, stash-laden resorts just outside of a small regional city. Local intel is provided by Mint’s head Japanese guide Kei Ishiuchi plus you’ll have videographer Blackbird on hand to get the shots.

Expect ‘Hokkaido-like’ dry powder, great tree riding and zero crowds. This is a deep snowfall region that’s home to over 15 ski areas that range from quirky, old-school ski hills to larger modern resorts and there’s even an active volcano that bears a resemblance to Mt Fuji. You’ll also get to see the ‘real’ Japan while staying in a lively regional city rather than a ski resort. After riding, there’s some incredible onsen to visit and at night there are endless dining and drinking options.

CONDITIONS – WHAT TO EXPECT FOR YOUR TOUR

During the tour you will ride a lot of powder and trees. Of course weather and conditions are impossible to predict so guests must be prepared to ride in all conditions. Here’s a guide of typical conditions:

February Frequent storms mean that you will often spend back-to-back days riding in the trees. If the weather is more settled it opens up more options for locations and terrain choices. Temperatures are below freezing and the snow stays in great condition, even days after a storm. February offers more options to travel further afield to some of the secret spots.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL DAY

Welcome to Japan. Make your way to the meeting point at Morioka Station where your guides will meet you and make the short drive to the hotel. After check in, you’ve got some free time to settle in to your room, unpack and set-up your equipment for the adventure ahead. In the evening, meet up with Ingemar, Abbe and the Mint guides for an info and welcome session. Your guides will explain what’s in store for the week, the current weather, run through equipment and answer any questions you have. Then join for dinner at one of our local izakaya. It’s a great opportunity to get to know everyone on tour as most guests are travelling solo.

DAY 2 TO 6 – STORM CHASING

You’ll spend the next 5 days riding the surrounding resorts. We keep the tour itinerary flexible so you can ride at the best resort on the day. Your guide will monitor storm cycles to ensure you’re scoring the best conditions at each resort as weather and snowfall affect each resort differently. We have over half a dozen resorts that we can access. Drive times can range from 30 – 70 minutes and largely depend on weather, snowfall and the groups appetite for adventure. Each day will follow a similar format:

Mornings – Enjoy the breakfast buffet at your leisure. Your guide will advise the departure time the evening before which is typically around 7:45 am. Each morning your guide will explain the weather and snow conditions for the day and advise the group where we’ll be riding. We have plenty of resorts to choose from, so your guides will keep a sharp eye on the weather so we can find you the best snow daily. Load up the van and drive to the resort.

Throughout the day – Once at the resort the aim is to spend a full day on-mountain riding with Ingemar and Abbe. Your local Mint guides will take the guess-work out of it and give you a locals perspective from day one. Be the first into the trees and hit the secret powder stashes. They also know the best places for lunch and have all the photo spots on lock.

Afternoons – After riding, your guides will make plans according to time, the groups interest and energy levels. You could find yourself at one of the many local onsen (hot springs), stopping off at a sushi train, a quick visit to the 7-Eleven or another local attraction like the sake brewery before returning to the hotel.

Evenings – On return to the hotel, you’ve got some free time. Dinners are included throughout the week and your guide will plan group dinners each night and most of the restaurants are just a short walk from the hotel. Join Ingemar, Abbe and the crew to share a few stories about the days’ turns over a bowl or ramen, a stack of sushi or at one of the many traditional izakaya, before turning in for the night.

DAY 7 – DEPARTURE DAY

Breakfast at the hotel, followed by check out. All good things must come to come to an end, and after a big week of riding deep, Japanese powder, your guide will drop you back to Morioka Station and say goodbye.
