An 8 Day Roadtrip to some of the most picturesque spots in Slovenia

If you are in search of somewhere new and off the beaten track, then our Slovenia Roadtrip could be just what you are looking for. Slovenia has a unique culture that combines the best of Europe and the Balkans. We spend 8 days exploring this winter wonderland on our roadtrip from the capital Ljubljana to the stunning Lake Bled and the wine capital Maribor. We visit the extraordinarily beautiful ski resorts in the Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps and Pohorje Mountain.

Slovenia offers a spectacular blend of accessible slopes, majestic scenery, small-scale and friendly resorts, bursting with authentic charm and affordable mountain food and drinks. There is great freeride terrain with plenty of off-piste options to satisfy freeride lovers. You’ll enjoy the quiet, queue-free and uncrowded groomed runs where you can feel as if you have discovered your own personal snowboarding wonderland. Our professional local guide will show you where to find the best lines and the best terrain that is suited to your ability.

During this tour we stay in 4 star hotels in the city centres in Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Maribor. Step outside the hotel and you can have your pick of what you’d like to do; culture, historic architecture, world-class drinking and dining scene, museums, it’s all on your doorstep. Head out with your guides each evening to explore the city sights.

Highlights

Interesting Architecture

Kanye West once tweeted to his 29 million followers about an obscure Slovenian modernist architect called Jože Plečnik (1872-1957). Kanye and architectural historians agree on Plečnik’s brilliance, and Ljubljana is the place to see his work.

Highlights

Cultural Visits

We'll visit the central market in Ljubljana and begin at Marjetka’s sauerkraut stand. She’s the only sauerkraut seller with a queue! A section of the market is dedicated to slippers, which Slovenians wear at all times indoors. The most surreal detail of the market may be the vending machines selling grave candles in jewel-coloured plastic candle holders that are traditionally placed on tombs.

Highlights

Sweet Treats

We dare you to walk past a Slovenian baked good store and not be tempted. The Slovenian specialities include kremšnita (millefeuille) and gibanica (layer cake with poppy seeds, walnut, curd cheese and apples), but our favourite is the čokoladne sanje, or “chocolate dream”.

Highlights

The world's oldest vine

We'll visit the oldest grape-producing vine in the world. It was planted more than 400 years ago to make wine when the Turks invaded the city. Now, the vine wraps around the outside of its very own museum. After admiring the old plant from the outside, you can enter its resident building to learn about the city’s wine heritage and sample some drinks in the wine tasting room.

Highlights

Luxury Accommodation

We'll make sure your stay is premium in every way. Throughout the tour each guest will stay in their own private rooms in 4 star hotels. The cosy and authentic rooms are equipped with heavenly soft beds and ensuite bathrooms, restaurants, some have wellness centres and wine bars.

FOOD & WINE

Slovenian cooking borrows a little something from each of its neighbours – Italy, Austria, Hungary and the Balkans. Slovenes have an obsession for using only fresh and locally sourced ingredients. The result is a terrific foodie destination, where you’ll sample dishes in unusual combinations, featuring items like pasta dumplings of potato, chives and bacon, salads drizzled with nutty pumpkinseed oil, and multilayered gibanica, a wildly decadent dessert. Slovenian wine is also a highlight, and regional whites and reds pair well with local specialities.

LJUBLJANA

Our tour starts in the capital Ljubljana. An improbably pretty city with its candy-coloured baroque and ornate Secessionist architecture. There are decorative footbridges over the river, hilltop castles and cobbled piazzas filled with café tables. There is no shortage of amazing cafes, bars and restaurants with excellent local wine and Italian influenced cuisine. You'll spot discreet reminders of Communism all over the city - hammers, sickles and red stars among the flower motifs on the Art Nouveau buildings.

MARIBOR & RESORTS

We spend 3 nights in Maribor. A city that oozes charm thanks to its delightfully patchy Old Town along the Drava River. Pedestrianised central streets buzz with cafes, and Maribor’s cobbled streets have begun to fill with wine restaurants and tasting rooms. Maribor is the gateway to the Maribor Pohorje, where we will visit Rogla Ski Resort and Maribor Pohorje Ski Resort.

LAKE BLED & RESORTS

We spend 3 nights in Lake Bled and it's every bit as lovely in real life as in the pictures. With its bluish-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. From Lake Bled we will visit Krvavec Ski Resort, Kranjska Gora Ski Resort and the freeride gem Vogel Ski Resort.

ARCHITECTURE & CULTURE

Ancient streets and squares, impressive medieval buildings, castles and city walls inspire the imagination of every visitor. The museums are rich and the culture vibrant. The architecture is wonderfully varied. Stroll through old historical towns and discover the traces of the past from ancient times and the Middle Ages to the middle-class architecture of the 19th century.

SNOW & CONDITIONS

March offers plenty of snowy adventures as its the month that sees fewer tourists. Ski season is well underway in the mountains, with plenty of snowfall and consistent sub-zero temperatures. The snow during March adds an additional enchanting quality to the already captivating destinations like Lake Bled and Ljubljana.
