Ride Greenland - Peaks to Ocean by Heli
The heliski area is on the East Coast in a region named Angmagssalik. The mountain ranges are between large fiords running from the Greenland ice cap. The highest peaks in the region top 6,500 feet, but generally most of the mountains are around 3,300 feet and rise directly from the ocean. The fiords are mostly ice filled, and the surrounding ocean is pack ice, making the region only accessible by boat in the summer months after the ice breaks up.
Access to the terrain is by helicopter, allowing you to reach remote peaks and drop into lines that run all the way to the shoreline. The terrain we ride is on the satellite islands formed as the ice cap has retreated, leaving an archipelago of granite islands. The heli runs usually start from the peaks and are between 2,600 feet and 3,600 feet long. Riding down towards large icebergs before being picked up by helicopter at the water’s edge is what makes this region unique.
Every day we use the helicopter to explore somewhere different as we work our way back up the fiords or move between different islands, and sometimes check out small Inuit villages in the region.
Spring is the best time to visit this region as there is more snow on the glaciers and the snowpack is usually well settled, resulting in less avalanche danger. The weather is also more settled, and with longer days even during storms there are more possibilities to get out.
This is one of the most spectacular places on earth, and in spring when the ice breaks up, the contrast with the blue ocean, snow, icebergs, and mountains is simply amazing. This is one of the most unique mountain environments anywhere in the world. Even compared to other remote destinations, the scale and setting here stand apart. As one of our guides puts it, it delivers an experience that feels even more striking than Antarctica.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This is not a fixed-schedule, high-volume heli operation. Weather, snow quality, and flying hours are not guaranteed, and the week requires a level of flexibility. In return, you gain access to a remote environment, varied terrain, and an experience that is difficult to replicate anywhere else. On average, groups are able to fly around 4 to 5 days per week, but weather downtime should be expected. Some days may not allow flying at all, while others open up multiple opportunities. The goal is to make the most of every available window.
SNOW AND CONDITIONS
This trip operates just below the Arctic Circle on an archipelago of granite islands beside the Greenland ice cap. The surrounding sea is filled with pack ice and icebergs, and the combination of weather systems can vary from season to season. Over the past 19 years of operation, on average groups will get out for 4.5 days per week. Non-flying days are part of the experience, and at times you may revert to splitboarding/ ski touring or may have to wait out storms at the hotel. Expect to ride a variety of snow conditions throughout the week. There are opportunities for powder, along with reliable spring snow. When the conditions line up, the region delivers exceptional spring corn.
ABILITY & PACE
This trip is suited to advanced ability only. You should be confident riding steep terrain in variable snow conditions and able to keep pace with the group across a full day in the mountains. Previous experience riding backcountry terrain is required. This is not a trip to learn or build fundamentals, and all riders should be comfortable moving through technical terrain with consistency.
HELICOPTER ACCESS AND GROUP SIZE
The group size is 4 people plus a guide, and there are two groups per helicopter. Access to the terrain is entirely by helicopter, using Greenlandcopter’s B3E aircraft flown by experienced local pilots.
BASE AND ACCOMMODATION
You’ll be based at Hotel Kulusuk, set in a remote Arctic landscape with mountain and ocean views in every direction. It’s a simple, comfortable base designed around the operation, allowing you to focus on the experience rather than anything else.

TRIP SUMMARY FROM THE GUIDE:
Greenland is the most spectacular place I have skied; the week offers a fantastic opportunity to experience somewhere completely different (more spectacular than Antarctica). It is not CMH and things in Greenland don’t operate with the same efficiency. The weather, snow quality or flying hours are not guaranteed and there is no refund policy.
In saying this, the runs are close, and I manage the operation to give you the best variety of terrain, skiing quality and maximum number of runs possible for the number of hours flown. I believe it is a very high-quality product and from experience feel that the weather is stable enough that you will get to have a great trip, although you can expect a day or two doing alternative activities. The days are long, and we make the most of every flying opportunity.
Some members of my group are now coming back for their 9th trip, so this does speak for the region. You do need to have a sense of adventure and a desire to check out an amazing place. Coming to the Arctic is the adventure and skiing is how we explore the region!
