About the Tour
If you want to ride in Alaska and you don’t know where to start, join us as we tour through Alaska with our experienced guides. We kick off the tour in Anchorage, and head to Alyeska Resort, where we spend our first two days days riding. The resort has some of the most insane in-bounds terrain in North America. Home to the infamous North Face, Alyeska lives up to its reputation of steep and deep with serious snowfall and challenging terrain. A perfect warm-up for the days ahead. Of course the highlight of this tour is the 3 days heli-skiing, racking up over 30,000 feet of vertical. We ride the iconic big lines of the famous Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains, including incredible open bowls, spines and long glacier runs. Throughout the trip we stay in luxury twin share accommodation, including the Majestic Valley Wilderness Lodge. We’ve got the heli pad out the front and the hot tub out the back, ready for us to kick back with a few frothy’s after scoring the best lines of our life. Fully hosted and guided. If you’re looking for THE ultimate heli-ski adventure, then this tour is for you.
3 Days Heli-skiing
Included in your tour is 3 days/30,000ft of heli-skiing. There is nowhere else in the world that can come close to the experience of heli-skiing in Alaska. Our heli-ski partner, Majestic Heli Ski operates in the Chugach and the Talkeetna Mountains where we access thousands of square miles of endless terrain. Whether you are a first time heli skier or a savvy veteran, your mind will be blown by the mountains and snow quality. We have a huge amount of terrain to choose from and our guides know how to find the line that you are looking for.
Snowfall & Conditions
The Chugach Mountains are adjacent to the ocean, and snowfall increases dramatically with elevation gain. Yearly snowfall totals are typically well in excess of 12 metres. It snows a lot, and a lack of powder is rare. The ocean does an amazing job of providing moisture for large, consistent snowfalls, as well as moderating winter temperatures. Daytime temperatures are typically -15 to -1 degrees Celsius, just like you would likely find at your local ski resort. The lodge is at 3000 feet, this is higher than all other Alaskan heli ski operators and the highest ski lift in Alaska! You will find great conditions and a deep snowpack in April. Alaska is not a cold, dark place, often the opposite. The average daylight is 16 hours for April.
With massive amounts of terrain, our heli-ski partner offers something for everyone to dream about and then experience. Choose from pristine bowls, AK spines, ramps, couloirs, glacier runs and terrain that goes-on forever, Alaskan steep faces and everything in-between and imaginable. No tree skiing here, we ride in the alpine and on glaciers. Vertical descents range from 1,000 feet to 4,500 feet (305 meters to 1372 meters) or more. The elevation band is 2500 feet (762 meters) to 9000 feet (2590 meters), altitude sickness is not an issue, non-stop fun is. And it is awesome.
Alaska has some of the best steep skiing in the world. Our guides goal is to provide you with a once in a lifetime powder skiing experience and the opportunity to challenge yourself. Skiing the steep lines requires the right combination of weather, snowpack stability, snow quality, skiing/snowboarding ability and teamwork. When conditions permit and guests have established confidence and trust with their guide, the opportunity to work into steeper and more exposed terrain may be permitted.
For the first 3 nights of the tour we stay at the ski-in/ski-out The Hotel Alyeska which is perfectly located at the bottom of the Alyeska Ropeway. This makes it the perfect base camp for the start of your Alaskan adventure. The hotel is equipped with shops, pool, hot tub, bars and restaurants. We then head to Majestic Heli Ski Lodge is nestled in the heart of the Northern Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. There are hiking, cross-country ski trails and wildlife viewing right outside the door. You can enjoy the stunning scenery from inside the lodge, outside on the deck or while soaking in the hot tub. On a clear night you might catch the Northern Lights in the sky. There is a spectacular dining and sitting room as well as several common areas to relax and reminisce in. There is a full service bar, retail store and gear storage. You’ll have everything you need to enjoy your stay. Amenities include high speed internet, satellite television, mobile phone service, hot tub, nordic skiing, yoga, snow-bikes and massage therapy (additional cost). Departure Day, Transfer to Anchorage Airport
On our final day we transfer you back to Anchorage Airport, where we bid you farewell with high fives and new shred buddies. WARNING: This trip will have you wanting to come back to this part of the world for more heli turns soon!
Our heli-ski partner, Majestic Heliski are dedicated to providing cutting edge safety standards and require that all guests and guides use an avalanche airbag backpack (included). All guests are provided with a harness, carabiner, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe. Instruction in the competent and efficient use of all safety equipment is included.
There is nothing typical about heli skiing, hopefully the following will paint a picture of what to expect when we are at the heli-ski lodge.
Upon arrival our staff will welcome you and get settled into your accommodations. The bar will be open (liquor laws prohibit bringing your own alcohol) and the views are spectacular.
Day 1/First Heli-Ski Day
Breakfast is a stunning buffet at 8:00 a.m. After breakfast, you will read and sign waivers, step on the scale and receive your avalanche rescue gear. You will then watch our video and presentation regarding our safety procedures, protocols and gear. Next, we will practice our avalanche rescue skills/companion rescue (transceiver, shovel, probe, communication and teamwork) and then complete an aircraft orientation. The check-in and briefing process typically takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the number of guests. We do not compromise on safety and we believe in thorough guest training. Each morning our guides will present a weather/snow report, outline the general plan for the day and let you know who your guide(s) and groups will be. We also have an information board in our lodge.
We will fly in the AStar helicopter and always ski in small groups; we do not fly in the 205 or 212 helicopters which may hold up to 10 guests. A group usually consists of 4 guests and 1 guide (weight restrictions apply). The AStar helicopter is configured for 4 guests in the back seat (facing forward) and 1 guide plus the pilot in the front.
A typical day is 6 – 10 runs. Several factors determine the number of runs per day; your vertical package, run length, group fitness, ability, number of groups, snow conditions, the weather, flight distance to terrain. . . On some rare days you may ski fewer than 6 runs, while on others it may be 10 runs, or even more. After 3-5 runs, lunch is served in the field, and then riding resumes for another 3-5 runs. Lunch consists of homemade soups, sandwiches, desserts and hot cocoa.
We are generally back at the lodge for appetizers and drinks in the late afternoon (again, depending on all those factors stated previously). Dinner is served at 6:30 or adjusted as needed to accommodate our skiing schedule. Dinner is 3 plated courses and fantastic (like all of our meals). The lodge takes food seriously and aims to impress. There is a full service bar (alcohol is not included) that is well stocked with a selection of high-quality wines, beers and liquors. The bar stays open well into the night, though we ask that you observe “quiet time” starting at 11 p.m., as many of our guests like to turn in early to be ready for the next day.
Breakfast at 8:00 a.m. We spend the day heli-skiing, eat lunch in the field, lets ski some more, time to go home/the lodge for appetizers, drinks and dinner.
Day 3 and Departure
On the morning of your last day have your bags packed, showers will be available after we finish riding for the day. Breakfast is at 8:00 a.m. Depart for the heli’s after breakfast. After riding we will check your gear in, check you out/settle your tab and say our goodbyes, and then off to Anchorage for your final night. Your package does not include dinner on your last day. We generally drive away from the lodge around 3 p.m., which puts us at the Anchorage airport 2 – 2 1/2 hours later.
A 50% deposit per person required to secure booking with balance payable 90 days prior to departure. All bookings are subject to Mint Tours and Majestic Heli Ski terms and conditions and subject to availability at time of booking.
