This tour is all about leaving the crowds of the well-known commercial resorts and finding some great turns on quiet slopes. The club fields in New Zealand are mostly family owned and run. These small resorts have had very little development and provide a quiet, crowd free and laid-back Kiwi ski field vibe.
While in Methven we will be staying at Taylors Lodge. This lodge has a great cozy feel and amazing views of Mt Hutt from the back window. Our host Nick is on hand for cooked breakfasts and gourmet Kiwi dinners each night. Nick is also quite skilled on the coffee machine so be sure to grab a delicious coffee in the morning too!
Our first mountain we ride at will be Mt Hutt. While this is a commercial resort it’s rare to get crazy crowds here and still very possible to get fresh tracks way past lunch on a pow day – if your legs can handle it! The mountain has world class lift facilities and base building and the terrain has something for everyone.
Porters is a mountain with the best of both worlds. They offer the facilities you would expect at a commercial resort while still being a small operation with little to no crowds. Porters has 1 quad lift and 3 T-Bars which link you all the way to the top. A great intro to the club resort riding in New Zealand.
Temple Basin is our chosen club field for this tour. The mountain itself plays host to some amazing terrain with large powder bowls, chutes, cliffs and big open slopes to play on. The mountain is accessed by rope tows. These require a belt and ‘nutcracker’ to get to the top. Learning to ride these can be a challenge so be prepared to work a bit to get these down pat! Once you’re confident on the tows it opens up not only Temple Basin but numerous more club fields in the area which use this same tow system.
While at Temple Basin we will be staying at the lodge located on the mountain and is an experience in itself to remember. From the car park we take a short walk to the goods lift where we will load all of our gear into the basket. From here we take a short hike up to the lodge – usually a 40 minute walk with the fittest claiming bragging rights when doing it in under 30 minutes. The trails winds through stunning alpine country and the views will definitely be worth the walk! At the lodge we will be looked after by our local hosts with breakfast, lunch and dinner all provided. The lodge also is fully licensed and has a great selection of local and imported drinks.
We have an optional day to add on Heli Boarding with Methven Heli. This is a must do for any keen rider as the terrain out here is mind blowing. A typical 5-run day will have you riding runs over 1000m+ vertical drop. The mountains are quite high out in this region which ensures the snow quality is consistently dry powder and usually quite deep! If you decide not to Heli we can organise other activities or even just spend a day relaxing and check out the quiet town of Methven.
All transfers are included on this tour and your Mint host will be with you to show you around the resorts and down to the pub in the evenings. It is recommended the rider be confident with T-Bars and have a moderate fitness level in order to get the most out of this tour.
Day 1 – Arrival Day
Upon arrival in Christchurch we will transfer you to Mt Taylor Lodge in Methven. Once settled in we will meet the crew over a gourmet dinner at the lodge.
Day 2 – Mt Hutt ride day
Our first day on snow will be at Mt Hutt. After a cooked breakfast at the lodge our transport will shuttle us to the hill. Hutt is a huge mountain with big long alpine bowls and a powder day here can be pretty special. The terrain caters for all levels of riders with long groomers, parks, steep chutes and alpine bowls. Dinner will again be served at Taylors Lodge.
Day 3 – Porters ride day
We will make the short transfer out to Porters after breakfast. Here we can explore this gem of a mountain. Your Mint host will be riding with you all day to show you around and get some good lines in. Dinner will again be prepared for us at Taylors Lodge.
Day 4 – Optional Heli Day
This day is reserved to add on a day of Heli Boarding with Methven Heli. They are the only Heli operator in this range which means their terrain options are pretty much endless. If your legs are a bit burnt out you can always use this day to have a sleep in and just explore the quiet town of Methven.
Day 5,6 & 7 – Temple Basin
For the next 3 days we will be riding and staying at Temple Basin. This mountain is a true icon of the Canterbury Club Field scene and the local kiwi hospitality will have you feeling right at home in the cozy lodge. The mountain itself has enormous riding potential and once you’ve got the rope tows down pat we will get out and explore it. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is all provided while we stay at Temple Basin. On the last day we will transfer to Christchurch for the final night.
Day 8 – Departure day
After a full week of riding some of the best terrain New Zealand has on offer we will drop you back to Christchurch airport for your flight home.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced riders.
Recommended that rider must be able to use T-Bars confidently in order to learn the rope tows.
$500 deposit required to secure booking with balance payable 30 days prior to departure. All bookings are subject to Mint Tours terms and conditions and are subject to availability at time of booking.
