Most people have heard of Niseko and there’s good reason for that. This North-island powder magnet scores an average of 15 meters of cold dry powder each season. Niseko is a well-developed international ski resort, boasting an enormous amount of terrain and lift infrastructure to match. The village is hands down the best and liveliest in all of Japan with numerous restaurants, bars and shops all within walking distance. This area also plays host to some quieter, and just as snowy resorts, which we take advantage of on this tour. Rusutsu, Moiwa and Kiroro Snow World are all located close by and score similar, and sometimes even more, snow than Niseko. This tour is fully guided and hosted by our local Mint Tours guide. We are passionate about riding deep, dry snow and aim to get you the best and deepest turns you’ve ever had!

Niseko is located on the western side of Hokkaido, on Japan’s north island. It’s proximity to the ocean means that cold wind blows down from Siberia over the warm currents in the Sea of Japan, forming storms that hit Hokkaido and drop huge amounts of cold blower powder snow. These storms can hang around for days or weeks on end, hence how Niseko earns its powder factory reputation. The surrounding mountains also score huge amounts of snow and are usually much quieter on a powder day, meaning more opportunities for untracked turns. Niseko’s main village, Hirafu, is packed full of great restaurants, bars, and shops to explore. It really is a world class ski resort! Throughout the tour we will ride many of the resorts in the Niseko region, and your guide will be with you every day to show you around some of their favourite spots both on the hill and in the village.
Small Group Sizes
We keep our client group size to a maximum of 7 people for a more personal experience between our guests and guides. This ensures you get the most out of your time with us, and keeping the groups small means less time organising people and more time on snow! Our transport includes vans driven by your guide for the entirety of the tour.
Pension Locomotion is a traditional Japanese lodge based in the quieter area of Izumikyo. This location has some great bars and restaurants around and is a short 5 minute walk to the heart of Grand Hirafu. This cozy lodge offers free WIFI, communal cooking facilities, lounge areas, drying room, laundry facilities and daily cooked Western style breakfasts.
The ski lifts in Grand Hirafu are within walking distance but your guide will collect you each morning and drive to the chosen ski area for the day. It can often be quite busy in the morning at Grand Hirafu so we will most likely start the mornings at a different resort to avoid the crowds and maximise our time in the powder.
Snow & Conditions
Hokkaido scores it’s biggest storms during the months of January and February. Expect cold temperatures and a lot of snow. Temperatures in the village usually range from -5 to -15 degrees celsius. Up on the mountain it can get down to around -20 degrees celsius, so make your you pack those thermals and a good balaclava! These low temperatures earn Hokkaido’s world famous reputation for consistent and dry snow. Most days throughout winter you can expect to be riding powder from the top of your boots to your waist. Even if we don’t get fresh snow overnight, the cold temperatures usually ensure we will be able to ride light dry snow days after storms.

Day 1 – Arrival Day
Once you arrive in Sapporo we will have a direct bus transfer to your accommodation in Niseko. Your guide will meet you upon your arrival in Niseko and we will all head out in the evening for a group dinner so you can get to know your guides and crew.
Day 2, 3 & 4 – Niseko Ride Days
We spend our first 3 days on snow exploring the huge resort of Niseko. We will ride at Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanozono. All 4 of these resorts are linked by the lifts and we can usually ski between all 4 if weather permits. If the top lifts are closed and ski access between resorts is shut down, we can pile into our van and drive over to Annupuri or Niseko Village to score fresh tracks all day. The advantage of the peak lifts closing is it limits ski access to the other resorts meaning less people on the hill and more fresh tracks for us! Your guide will be with you each day to show you their favourite spots and get you to any type of terrain you desire.
Day 5 – Moiwa Ride Day
Moiwa is a smaller resort that is connected to Niseko but not part of the same resort. This place has a world famous reputation and a must do for the powder hungry. We will spend the day riding the epic trees and powder bowls before checking out one of the amazing Onsens close by. The hot springs out this way are by far some of our favourites in Japan!
Day 6 – Rusutsu Ride Day
Rusutsu resort is already on the radar for many powder enthusiasts, but as it’s remained relatively quiet, you can be sure that on a powder day the trees will stay untouched for long enough to tire you out! Your guide will be with you all day to get you the best turns.
Day 7 – Kiroro Ride Day
Kiroro Snow World is located about 45 minutes from Niseko and scores a huge amount of snow. This place is fast becoming a favourite of ours with some great tree skiing and consistent snow. Your guide will spend the day showing you why! After a relaxing onsen at the Kiroro Mountain Centre, we will head back to Niseko for our final night together.
Day 8 – Departure day
Pack up and exchange details with your new friends you’ve hopefully shared some of the best turns of your life with. We will transfer you back to the airport for your return home. Alternatively, if you decide to stay on longer in Niseko we’re happy to help organise this for you.
Suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Some previous experience skiing powder is encouraged, but not necessary.
To secure your spot we require a $500 deposit with the balance paid 60 days prior to departure. Group numbers are strictly limited. The tour is subject to Mint Tours terms and conditions.
