Resorts: Myoko & Madarao
Myoko and Madarao have some of the easiest off-piste runs in Japan making it perfect for intermediate riders wanting to improve their tree and powder riding skills. If you want to ride deep powder in perfectly spaced trees, then this tour is perfect for you. Both Myoko and Madarao not only allow riding in the tree’s, they encourage it. They also leave many wide open runs un-groomed which is the perfect way to get used to riding powder. During the tour we’ll have a professional snowboard photographer on hand capturing all the action. At the end of the sessions you’ll be able to download all the images from the day. This tour is running at the the peak of the snow season and at this time of year the Nagano and Niigata region gets hammered with consistent storms that bring massive quantities of light, dry powder snow. Due to it’s close proximity to the Sea of Japan this region scores the highest annual snowfall on Japan’s main island of Honshu. With stats like this, powder is virtually guaranteed. We kick off this tour in Myoko Kogen where we will explore the 4 resorts on offer. This place has a huge amount of terrain and is consistently one of our guide’s favourite places to ride. After spending 4 days hitting all of our secret powder stashes we will head over to Madarao Kogen. This resort has amazing gladed tree runs, epic natural halfpipes and a supernatural freeride terrain park; freeriding heaven. Both resorts have great natural hot springs to rest weary legs and will emmerse you in a real Japanese cultural experience. A typical day on tour will consist of an rise early for a group breakfast at the lodge. We’ll discuss the plan for the day, taking into consideration which resort will have the best conditions. We will either make the call to ride the local resort by our lodge or to make the short bus ride to the neighboring resorts. Our Mint guides will be riding with the group every day to help find the best snow and terrain to best suit everyone. You have the option of riding with the guides, breaking into your own groups, exploring the town or just relaxing in an onsen for a well earned break. Each night we’ll head into the village to eat at one of the local restaurants and after dinner there will always be tours to local bars for anyone wanting to explore the nightlife.
From the moment you arrive and see the towering snow banks lining the streets and steam billowing from natural hot springs, you will feel like you are in a traditional Japanese resort. While being one of Japan’s most famous ski resorts, Myoko is not overly commercialised, so you’ll enjoy a real Japanese experience. There is enough English signage to feel comfortable, but the lack of large numbers of international guests helps you feel immersed in the culture. There are excellent restaurants and bars that cater to all budgets plus you can purchase all the basics in the village. Being an onsen town, you also can access many different onsen throughout the village for a small fee.
Myoko Resort Area
Myoko is made up of four main resorts – Akakura Onsen, Akakura Kanko, Suginohara and Ikenotaira. Myoko is a lot quieter than the larger resorts, so lift lines are usually non-existent and on a powder day (which is often!) there’s lots of opportunity for freshies well into the afternoon. A shuttle bus connects all of the resorts. You can easily spend a morning riding freshies at Suginohara and spend the afternoon riding park at Ikenotaira.
Akakura Onsen & Akakura Kanko From our accommodation, you can access the two interlinked resorts of Akakura Onsen & Akakura Kanko. It is a two minute easy walk to the nearest ski lift. These areas offer an excellent variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced groomed and off-piste terrain across the two resorts.
Ikenotaira Home to groomed slopes with rolling terrain, easy well spaced trees, and three terrain parks. Suitable for beginner to intermediate riders or if you’re up for hitting the park, it’s suitable for intermediate to advanced riders.
Suginohara With Japan’s longest run at 8.5 km, long wide groomers for carving, a huge terrain park and steep ungroomed slopes at the top of the mountain, Suginohara has some of the best terrain in the area. Suitable for intermediate and advanced riders. Be sure to look out for the Snow Monkeys on the drive to ‘Sugi’.
Madarao is a freeriding gem with some of the easiest off-piste runs in Japan making it perfect for intermediate riders wanting to improve their tree and powder riding skills. Madarao also has some of Japans best gladed trees and natural halfpipes to slash around in.
This tour is running at the the peak of Japan’s snow season. At this time of year the Nagano and Niigata region get hammered with consistent storms that bring massive quantities of light, dry powder snow. Due to it’s close proximity to the Sea of Japan this region scores the highest annual snowfall on Japan’s main island of Honshu. Myoko has been known to top Japan’s snowfall tally, with some seasons scoring over 16 metres! With stats like this, powder is virtually guaranteed.
Optional Backcountry Day
Madarao and Myoko both have amazing backcountry terrain. Intermediate and advanced riders may opt to add a fully guided backcountry day.
Throughout the tour we stay in twin share hotel style accommodation. We select modern and comfortable hotels that are close to all amenities and most importantly close to the ski area. All accommodation is minimum 3 star standard.
Mint Tours Guides
Your professional guides have an in-depth knowledge of the local area, terrain and conditions. You can be assured we will always find you the best snow conditions available. Our goal is to get everybody on tour enjoying themselves and pushing your riding in a relaxed and fun environment.
Small Group Numbers
Our guests to guide ratio is 6 : 1. We like to keep our group sizes small so you can get the most out of your time with us. There’s nothing worse than riding with a large group, especially on a powder day! We have our guides on-snow every day. At night we’ll have our hosts on hand to show you around the local area. With our small groups, you’ll feel like part of the Mint Crew and not just another face in the crowd.
Optional Backcountry Snowmobile Tours
We offer day trips to a private backcountry zone where you get the opportunity to ride high powered backcountry snowmobiles in deep, un-tracked snow. All safety equipment and instruction is provided.
Unlimited Access to Powder Boards
All Mint Tours guests in Myoko get exclusive access to our demo fleet of powder boards from the Nitro Snowboards range.

Not only are our guides with you on-mountain during the day, they keep the stoke going well into the night, so you’ll always have people to socialise with and places to go.
