Arctic Pow Surf Tour
8 Nights I 6 Days Riding
February 05, 2017 to February 13, 2017
$3495 PER PERSON
This is a Powder Surfing tour to Finnish and Swedish Lapland, above the Arctic Circle in the depths of winter. The focus of this tour is Powder Surfing, which at it’s core, is a return to the roots of snowboarding. On this tour, you’ll get to shape your own snowsurf board and ride your hand-crafted shape in the local hills and backcountry areas. You’ll get to experience binding-free riding, propelled by gravity. Similar to surfing and skateboarding, the lack of bindings allows exploration of how stance and position affect the ride. It conveys the spirit and original stoke of surfing and gives the rider a connection with nature. It opens up the backcountry and backyard hills to new forms of riding and exploration. Here’s what to expect on our Arctic Pow Surf Tour:
- You’ll get to shape and build your own snowsurf board with the help of ILAHUboards. WATCH HERE
- You’ll spend two days powder surfing in the Finnish backcountry with snowmobile assisted ascents. WATCH HERE
- You’ll ride in Finland and Sweden at local resorts and backcountry areas including Svanstein Ski. WATCH HERE
- You’ll have the best chance at witnessing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) on the cold, clear nights. WATCH HERE
- You’ll get to experience snowboarding culture in the Arctic while travelling with our local guides.
- You’ll sample many of the local activities like ice fishing, ice hole swimming, sauna, husky sledding, ice karting and snowmobiling.

Here is our itinerary for the tour.
5 February 2017 – Arrival Day
Welcome to Finnish Lapland! Your guide will meet you at Rovaniemi Airport. Once all guests have arrived we’ll load up the van and then hit the road. Our first destination is Svanstein Ski Resort, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. You’ll get to know the other guests on the short 1.5 hour drive to Svanstein. We’ll check in to our accommodation which will be our base for the next 3 nights, and you’ll have some time to settle in and relax before dinner. We’ll have a group dinner so you can get to know the guests and guides.
6 & 7 February, 2017 – Svanstein Ski Resort
If you want to get a feel for the terrain and conditions in Svanstein, then check out this short edit from last February. WATCH HERE. It’s enough to get anyone frothing to ride some Swedish pow. Apart from the super light dry snow and perfect freeride terrain, the resort has 16 marked runs plus a terrain park with a mini pipe. Svanstein also has some serious cred in the snowboard world. The resort is operated by three legends in snowboarding; Johan Olofsson, Ingemar Backman and Jacob Söderqvist. These guys will show us a few of their favourite runs and if the conditions are right, they will operate the sleds so we’ve got access to the best backcountry zones. If you’re still wanting to tick off some more Swedish experiences after riding, you can have a sauna with the locals, go husky sledding in a nearby village, or do some ice-fishing. At night we’ll get together for a group dinner at our lodge and enjoy a hearty three course Swedish meal.
8 February – ILAHU Board Shaping Day
Today we shape our snowsurf board. We depart Svanstein and drive back across the border to Finland where our next destination is the ILAHU Boards HQ in Rovaniemi. At the workshop you’ll meet our good friends Jan and Maxim who are the master craftsmen behind ILAHU. Find out about their boards HERE This is where the magic happens and you’ll get to shape your own, custom snowsurf board. Watch this short video on Jan and Maxim and how they have developed their designs and company. WATCH HERE On arrival at ILAHU we’ll get a brief introduction to snowsurfing, then we’ll get let loose in the workshop. The guys will give us an overview of the tools we’ll need to use and operation. We’ll also get to select a template and choose a blank. We’ll have a 2-3 hour shaping session with Jan and Maxim providing hands on help and guidance. At the end of the session, you’ll come away with your own custom Ilahu snowsurf board with pad and leash as well as the experience of shaping and building your own snow-surfboard with master-shapers. To finish up we’ll have lunch at ILAHU then load up our new boards in the van then head off to our next destination, Pyhä Ski Resort. We’ll check in to our accommodation in Pyhä and then you’ll get to meet 2 of our local guides, Keso and Mika. These guys are here to give us a rundown on what to expect on our snowsurf day. We’ll then have dinner and drinks at the hotel.
9 February – ILAHU Powder Surfing Day
Early start with breakfast at hotel, then we’ll load up the van and we’ll drive to one of the local ‘Fells’. These Fells are local hills where we’ll have our snowsurf sessions. On arrival at the Fell, our guides will brief us about our backcountry location, provide us with safety info and load us up with some locally made energy bars so we’re ready for the day. We’ll make our approach to the ‘surf grounds’ with snowmobile & sleigh as well as some short hikes. We’ll then divide into groups of 4 and spend the morning snow surfing with our guides. When it’s lunch time, it’s time to get out of the elements and escape the cold into a ‘Kota’. These Kota’s are traditional Finnish timber huts in the woods, where visitors can cook food over the fire. We’ll break for lunch in a ‘Kota’, get warm, grill some food over the fire and share some beers. In the afternoon we’ll head out for another freeride session and explore some more lines on the Fell. After our snowsurf session, our traditional Finnish experience keeps on going. We’ll visit a local ice swimming hole and smoke sauna and finish the day with a traditional Finnish dinner in a Kota with a few more beers. Throughout the day we’ll have professional snowboard photographer Jani Kärppä capturing all the action. At the end he’ll send through all the shots so you’ll have photo’s to get all your buddies at home frothing.
10 February – Pyhä Ride Day
Wake up and have breakfast at the hotel. Today we’re exploring Pyhä Ski Resort, which is just steps away from our front door. You can choose to ride Pyhä with your guide, or break off and do your own thing. Pyhä is a medium sized resort and has a good combination of groomed and off-piste areas to ride. After a day riding, there is loads of options. We can organize an ice-fishing trip, go ice-karting on a frozen track, head to a local husky farm and for a husky sled ride or perhaps go snowmobiling. Your guides will be on-hand to organize any of these experiences. One of the highlights being in the Arctic Circle is the possibility of seeing the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) is a light phenomenon that occurs in the Arctic sky on clear, dark nights, caused by solar winds interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field. Statistically, they are most likely to be spotted from mid-August to mid-April, so we’ll be closely watching the forecast for any viewing opportunities. In the evening we’ll have a group dinner and a few drinks at one of the local restaurants and sample a few local brews.
11 February – Pyhä Backcountry Day
We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and get prepared for our backcountry day. Today we’ll head out for a guided day into the Pyhä backcountry and surrounding national park. We’ll have our local guides on hand to show us all their secret zones and keep the good vibes going while we’re hiking and finding fresh lines. There are many different freeride areas in the vicinity of the Fell and the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, which offer challenging terrain suited to even to the most experienced riders. After a big day hiking we’ll head back to the hotel for a sauna and have some time to relax, before dinner at one of the local restaurants.
12 February – Powder Surf Day
We’ll get up early and have breakfast at the hotel. Wax up our snowsurf boards and get ready to head to one of the local Fells for our final snowsurf day. At the area, we’ll load up the snowmobile and head out for our snowsurf session. Our guides are on-hand to show you the best lines and give you some tips. After riding we’ll head back to Pyhä and then we’ll get together for dinner and drinks on our final night.
13 February – Departure Day
Breakfast at the hotel followed by check out. We’ll load up the van and drive back to Rovaniemi Airport where we’ll say goodbye after the epic week riding above the Arctic pow.
